Buy a Tulip Help a Girl 2018 … 4th edition!

We are currently gearing up to launch our “Buy a Tulip, Help a Girl” campaign for 2018. This is the fourth time that we have run this campaign and, this year, we are hoping that even more of our local and international schools join us. The tulips will be sold in conjunction with the International Day of the Girl Child on 11 October 2018, with ALL the profits received going to the education and housing of ‘our girls’ in Lumla.

The International Day of the Girl Child is a UN initiative “to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights”. This philosophy resonates with Tara Bodong’s initial (and ongoing) project in Lumla.

The decision to build a nunnery/school solely for girls was taken, after careful consideration, to address the problem of extreme poverty at the root, and also offer a sustainable solution that was suitable and acceptable to the girls’ families and the community. Because it is almost impossible for children living in the remote areas to get to the government school in Lumla village safely, our priority was to not only provide access to education for the girls, but to ensure that our girls have a ‘second home’ with daily meals and a safe place to sleep. This gives comfort to their parents that they are safe while in our care as they are living within a Tibetan Buddhist environment.

Members of our team are reaching out to schools during the next couple of months and providing further details on the campaign. For more information about our project please watch the videos linked to below:
